THE ISLAND GRIND

Small businesses that have a physical location typically have some degree of renovations needed to their space before opening up shop and often are required by the City to apply for a building permit to complete these changes. Commercial renovations in a building that is already constructed are referred to in the construction industry as TI’s (tenant improvements).

When working on commercial renovations for businesses, we are very mindful of budget while ensuring that the materials used will be lasting in both style and longevity, and maintain an aesthetic that speaks to the target market of their clientele and ties in with their branding. Together with Martin Hagarty of MHA Ltd, we were thrilled to be invited to help design this coffee bar in Campbell River which opened in January 2017 called The Island Grind ~ now a staple in our community.

Owners Evan Falck and Robyn Yow had a vision of a coffee shop with an industrial feel while embracing our local west coast style. To achieve that, we incorporated concrete floors, local woods for furniture knowing that these materials would be able to withstand high traffic, and commercially rated products in their kitchen and front counter areas. Knowing that Evan & Robyn wanted to display local merchandise and artwork in the store, we needed to create a neutral backdrop to highlight these items so we opted for monochromatic tones, natural fir & maple, and an accent wall for a pop of colour for a coastal feel.

As a small business ourselves, it fills our hearts to see The Island Grind grow over the years and become a local favourite. Five years later, The Island Grind is getting ready to open their second location in Campbell River at Discover Harbour and we are excited to once again be invited to assist in the design of their newest space.

We can’t wait to share more about this upcoming project and run into you at The Island Grind!
